UPDATE: Name of one the deceased riders added after being publically released.
Belgium’s amateur Tour of Flanders (We Ride Flanders) gran fondo was marred by the deaths of two riders on Saturday, with several others critically injured during the popular event.
The organizer announced the tragic news via Facebook, “What should have been a beautiful day ended tragically. During We Ride Flanders 2025, two people lost their lives on the Taaienberg and Oude Kwaremont, they became unwell while riding. We are heartbroken by these tragic events. Our thoughts are with all the loved ones of these two people, may they rest in peace.”
On the Oude Kwaremont 45 year-old former French pro Stephane Krafft (COFIDIS) collapsed while ascending, with medics working to revive the man before an emergency helicopter evacuated him to hospital, where he was declared deceased by doctors. Team Cofidis expressed its condolences, “With deep sadness, the Cofidis team has learned of the death of former cyclist Stéphane Krafft. We extend our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.”
According to Belgian media, a Dutch rider died from a heart attack while riding up the Taaienberg despite heroic efforts by medical staff to save his live. “The man was resuscitated and the ambulance was there very quickly, but all help came too late,” said event organizer Gert Van Goolen.
Another cyclist collapsed on the short but steep Eikenberg and was in critical conditon, but medics resuscitated the man on site and transported him to hospital. His condition is unknown at press time.
A participant also crashed hard on the famous Koppenberg climb and was airlifted to hospital with a suspected ankle fracture.
The Tour of Flanders gran fondo is considered a must do “bucket list” ride for weekend cycling enthusiasts. Taking place a day before the professional Tour of Flanders, it attracts over 15,000 participants who tackle the same challenging route as the professionals.
