A tragic collision during the amateur Arden Challenge stage race in Hotton, Belgium killed 22 year-old Beau van Izerloo (WILLEBRORD WIL VOORUIT) of the Netherlands on Friday.

Wielerflits reports that after the first stage van Izerloo collided with a truck, and despite heroic attempts to resuscitate the young Dutchman he died at the scene from his injuries.

On Facebook team Willebrord Wil Vooruit also announced the sad news, “Words fall short here, incomprehensible, incomprehensible. Beau van Izerloo died yesterday in a fatal accident. We wish the family and all those who loved him a lot of strength.”

According to Belgian media, it was a blind spot accident on a bridge.

Hotton mayor Philippe Courard offered his condolences via social media, “The entire cycling family is in mourning today. Hotton hosted a cycling race, for an event that was intended to be friendly and festive. A tragedy unfortunately occurred on the bridge, taking the life of a young Dutch rider.My thoughts go to his loved ones, his team and the organization in this painful ordeal.”

At press time Arden Challenge organizers had not decided if the race will continue on Saturday or if it will be cancelled out of respect for van Izerloo.

This is the third young racer in the Benelux region in recent months to die, following 19 year-old Tuur Hancke and 18 year-old Miel Dekien.
