One of the UCI’s newest and most anticipated Gran Fondo World Series events failed to launch this past weekend in southern China on the island of Hainan.
Gran Fondo Hainan would have been China’s first time hosting UCI Gran Fondo World Championship qualifying races – time trial and gran fondo.
Although the event website still lists an 18km individual time trial on Saturday 1 March, followed by a 120km gran fondo on Sunday, neither race took place and the local organizer did not offer updates. Event registration is still active though with unspecified cancellation/refund policies.
The UCI commented that Gran Fondo Hainan is “likely to be postponed to May and/or September.”
Gran Fondo Daily reached out to the local organizer for comment, but did not receive a reply.
