UCI Gran Fondo World Championship qualifying took over the streets of Dubai, UAE early Sunday morning, with 2000 riders trying to earn a golden ticket to race at the 2025 World Championships by finishing in the top 25% of their age/gender category.
The 15th edition of Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge also offered 36,000 AED (10,000€) in cash prizes, with the DUBAI POLICE CYCLING TEAM taking home the lion’s share – 28,000 AED.
On a very fast 96km dead flat course the men’s race came down to a massive pack finish, 100+ riders, with 31 year-old Italian Francesco Lamon (DUBAI POLICE) winning by a tire width for the men in a photo finish to stop the clock at 2:01:47. Maksim Orekhov and Jasper Verkuijl were second and third in that order.
30 year-old Uzbek Makhabbat Umutzhanova (DUBAI POLICE), also sprinted to victory, defeating teammates Ebtissam Zayed and Akvile Gedraityte on the line to sweep the women’s podium, with all three finishing in 2:01:49.
