The Colombian Departmental Sports Institute of Boyacá regretfully announced that up-and-coming racer Juan David Cardenas (BOYACA CYCLING LEAGUE) died Monday 19 February after crashing while training.

“We regret the death of Juan David Cárdenas Suesca, a cyclist who lost his life this Monday in a traffic accident, while he was doing his usual training between Tunja and Paipa,” they said via press release.

According Traffic Police Captain Jonny Camilo Gonzalez Munoz, the 19 year-old cyclist apparently had his head down and did not see a road maintenance truck parked roadside when he crashed head-on into it around 10:00 Monday morning at a high rate of speed.

Juan David Cardenas was considered a climbing specialist, finishing on the podium in second place at the junior Vuelta al Futuro race in 2021. In 2023 and 2024 he continued developing his race craft by competing in Europe. Having recently returned to Colombia, he was training to race on the national team at the time of his passing.

On X-Twitter his team posted, “Juan David was an athlete who from his inception was part of the training process of the Boyacá Race of Champions program, riding with the junior and youth teams. He will be remembered for his talent and cordiality with his coaches and teammates.”
