The 26th edition of South Africa’s 99er Cycle Tour saw over 4500 riders participate on Saturday 8 February in Durbanville, with Jean-Pierre Lloyd and Daniela Schertenleib victorious in the storied gran fondo race.
Jean-Pierre Lloyd, 24, finished the 95km gran fondo in 2:14:22, narrowly defeating breakaway companion Jaco Venter in a final burst of speed. Alex Heward was next a minute later. Lloyd also won the green jersey sprint competition.
In a tight four-up sprint Daniela Schertenleib, 30, edged Erin Shillaw, Lize Cornelius and Sabrina Schaer to claim the women’s victory with a final time of 2:23:21.
16 year-old Yahyaa Martin impressively won the 76km medio fondo in 2:08:32 from field of 487 riders, while Jason Visser did the same in the 45km piccolo fondo.
With over 500 competitors in the 80km gravel fondo, it came down to a photo finish three-up sprint, with Luca Stermin winning in 2:29:16 over Cobus Marais and Philipp Schmid.
