A raging truck fire destroyed all the bikes, equipment and gear of the Vietnam Cycling Team en route to the 2025 UCI Asian Road Cycling Championships in Thailand on Wednesday 5 February.
After the team arrived in Bangkok on Wednesday, their bikes and gear were loaded on a truck by the race organizer for transport to the championships taking place 7-16 February in the city of Phitsanulok.
While the truck was traveling to the race venue it was involved in an accident and caught fire, which engulfed the vehicle and destroyed all cargo – including 27 racing bikes, spare wheels and personal gear (shoes, helmets, kits, etc.) of the Vietnam team.
“All of our bikes were burned, and my bike was among them,” 3X Asian Cycling Road Champion Nguyen Thi That told Tuoi Tre News.
On Thursday morning event organizers held an emergency meeting and announced the host country and teams from other countries would lend the Vietnamese riders personal equipment and bikes so they could participate in the championship races.
“The organizing committee has contacted us to determine the extent of the losses and to gather the necessary sizes for helmets and shoes so that suitable replacements can be provided,” said Nguyen Ngoc Vu of the Vietnam Cycling Federation (FCV).
VCF coach Mai Cong Hieu encourage the 17 rider team to do their best under difficult circumstances, “With the borrowed bicycles, we can only encourage the team to compete for the honor of their country, but it’s hard to demand high achievements from them.”
The 2025 UCI Asian Road Cycling Championships brings together almost 500 cyclists from across Asia, including national teams, U23, Junior and age-group cyclists, to compete in road and time trial events.
