On 15 January the Prescott Valley Police Department (PVPD) in Arizona USA arrested Daniel Lee Jones on charges of manslaughter and driving under the influence in the death of teenage bike racer Gabriel Grande.
The 14-year-old Bradshaw Mountain High School (BMHS) freshman was killed when Jones allegedly crashed a truck into Grande while the cyclist was on a training ride 12 November 2024.
According to PVPD, prior to the crash Jones had been involved in a domestic violence incident, slashed his wife’s automobile tires and drove away in a truck, which then crashed into Grande.
New toxicology reports indicate Jones was impaired at the time of the crash, with police taking him into custody Wednesday morning and booking him into the Yavapai County Jail.
Grande was a dedicated teammate and accomplished racer for the BMHS Mountain Bike Team, finishing 4th at the State Championships just one week before his tragic death.
”Gabriel was such a talented bike rider too, with a definite bright future in the sport; probably would have become the best in the state,” BMHS Principal Rick Bradshaw told The Daily Courier.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help Grande’s family cover Gabriel’s extensive medical bills and funeral expenses. So far over $52,000 has been donated.
