UPDATE 7 MAY 2025: The UCI has banned Luis Miguel Pinto Costa from participating in sport for 2 years.

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) announced it has stripped Portuguese cyclist Luis Miguel Pinto Costa of a bronze medal won at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games and referred his doping case to the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) for potential further disciplinary action.

51 year-old Costa committed an anti-doping violation after returning a positive test result for the banned substance Chlorthalidone on 2 September at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, two days before winning a bronze medal in the Men’s H5 Individual Time Trial.

After both Costa’s A and B test samples confirmed the presence of Chlortalidone he acknowledged the anti-doping violation.

Chlortalidone is a diuretic banned at all times by the World Anti-Doping Agency that some athletes use to reduce the urine concentration of performance enhancing drugs in their body, thus making it more difficult for anti-doping agencies to detect these drugs via urine testing.

With IPC now referring the case to UCI, the international governing body for cycling will determine any further applicable consequences for Costa, including a possible ban from sports.
