SCC Events, organizer of the biggest amateur sporting events in Germany, announced on Wednesday that their VeloCity Berlin cycling race has been cancelled due to an unsustainable cost structure.
“We are suspending the event for the years 2025 and 2026,” SCC unceremoniously posted on the event website. “We are now evaluating how the exceptionally high costs in terms of safety and road closures can be designed in a way that is compatible with the future.”
Since 2022 the event has attracted over 20,000 amateur cyclists riding on two closed road routes through Germany’s capital city. Both courses started at the famous Brandenburg Gate with the 60km route taking riders past landmark cultural sites, while the longer 100km route also added the cities of Stahnsdorf, Ahrensdorf and Großbeeren.
The 2025 edition was scheduled to take place 12-13 July.
