UPDATE 17 February 2024: Marcel Laurenz has been banned for 3 years by the UCI.

The International Cycling Union (UCI) announced 2X Masters World Sprint Champion Marcel Laurenz of Germany has been provisionally suspended after returning positive anti-doping test results for the banned drugs Drostanolone and Stanozolol.

The 52 year-old amateur cyclist allegedly tested positive on 6 October 2024 and is now banned from participating in sport in any capacity pending the final outcome of a to be scheduled anti-doping hearing.

Laurenz, who goes by the nickname germandwarf and describes himself as “hard working, cycling crazy, gym maniac”, is the 2023 and 2024 UCI Masters World Sprint Champion in the 50-54 age category. If found guilty of the alleged June anti-doping violations he may be stripped of the world sprint title won in October 2024.

Stanozolol is an inexpensive anabolic steroid drug that mimics the effects of Testosterone to boost muscle growth and quick recovery, while maintaining lean body mass. It is often used illegally in race horses.

Drostanolone is an anabolic steroid developed to treat female breast cancer, but was never brought to market and is now a popular illegal performance enhancing drug within the world of professional body building.

Both drugs are banned at all times by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
