Around 2500 amateur cyclists from 32 countries joined 7X Grand Tour champion Chris Froome and Tour de France superstar sprinter Mark Cavendish on Saturday for the first-ever L’Étape Sun Moon Lake by Tour de France gran fondo in Taiwan.

On the mountainous 104km route it was Chris Froome (Israel Premier Tech) who reached the finish line first, scoring his first road victory in six years and standing tall on the podium as he received the yellow champion’s jersey. The 39 year-old WorldTour rider stopped the clock in 2:54:48, followed by amateurs Wu Tan (2:56:40) and Lai Yuliang (2:56:49).

Sprinting ace Mark Cavendish (3:09:23), who achieved a record-breaking 35th Tour de France stage win in July, finished in sixth place.
