The UCI has announced that Polish rider Kacper Gieryk tested positive for the banned substance Erythropoietin (EPO) at the 2024 UCI Road World Championships. The 21 year-old has been provisionally suspended from participating in sport in any capacity until an anti-doping court decides his innocence or guilt.

The anti-doping test was carried out on the 24th of September during the UCI Road World Championships in Zurich, Switzerland – one day after Gieryk competed in the 30km Mens U23 Time Trial, where he finished in 40th place four minutes behind the winner.

A time trial specialist, Gieryk is a 3X Polish National U23 Time Trial Champion and won France’s prestigious Chrono des Nations U23 time trial in 2023.

Gieryk is the second U23 rider from the 2024 UCI Road World Championships charged with an EPO anti-doping violation. Czech rider Daniel Vysocan tested positive for EPO while competing in the Men’s U23 road race, which he did not finish, and is now serving a three-year ban from sport.
