Argentina’s 2022 World Cup champion coach Lionel Scaloni created quite a stir when he showed up unannounced to race Gran Fondo Siete Lagos on Sunday. The 46 year-old national hero of Argentina finished an impressive 35th in the elite race, including 2X National Time Trial Champion Sergio Fredes who earned overall victory.

Scaloni reached the finish line in Villa La Angostura after racing 110 kilometers in the rain with a time of 3:12:58, trailing race winner Sergio Fredes and runner-up German Nicolas Tivani Perez by 27 minutes. Maria Laura Bugarin won for the women in 3:09:41.

In a recent interview with sports journalist Juan Pablo Varsky, Scaloni talked of his love of cycling: “It is a wonderful sport, it cleared me a lot and allows me the possibility of analyzing and preparing [for] matches. You are thinking continuously, outdoors, thinking and at the same time training.”

Like many cycling addicts, when he is not on the pitch Scaloni spends as much of his free time riding and training for epic events, like the Mallorca 312 where he finished just outside the medio fondo Top 20 in 2023.

Over 3000 cyclists participated in the 13th edition of Gran Fondo Siete Lagos.
