French Anti-Doping Agency (AFLD) has banned 21 year-old French BMX star Mariane Beltrando, 2021 UCI World Champion, for 2 years after she tested positive for the banned substance Chlorthalidone in November 2022.

Although initially cleared of wrongdoing, Beltrando was found guilty of anti-doping violations after a successful appeal by AFLD. Though, the anti-doping agency conceded that she had not intentionally engaged in doping and likely ingested Chlorthalidone accidentally via contaminated food or environmental conditions.

Nonetheless, World Anti-Doping Agency code states athletes are solely responsible for all substances in their body regardless of source or intent. Taking into account Beltrando’s circumstances, AFLD reduced Beltrando’s ban to only 2 years since her positive test result was deemed no fault or negligence on her part.

Chlorthalidone is a diuretic (water pill) typically prescribed to treat high blood pressure, as well as liver and kidney disease. It is often used by athletes to lose weight quickly or mask the presence of banned substances, like steroids, by reducing their concentration in urine.

Beltrando is banned from participating in sport in any capacity until 1 October 2026.
