UPDATE 24 October 2024: Article updated with details on the tragical death of top Canadian cyclist Lindsay Burgess.
Two-time Tripleshot Cross Fondo gravel champion Lindsay Burgess, 41, died after being struck by a pick-up truck at a paved intersection on Sunday 20 October while participating in the 9th edition of the gravel race in British Columbia.
On Wednesday her husband Chad announced Lindsay’s passing in a heart-breaking post on Instagram:
“As the news has been slowly coming out, you may have heard that Lindsay was involved in a serious accident during the cross fondo, which tragically ended her life. I have no words to express how devastated I am, and I’m truly sorry that many of you are feeling the same way. Lindsay has touched the lives of countless individuals from the cycling community, the sailing community, and her workplace. People in all those communities and her close family on the mainland are hurting right now. I’ve been overwhelmed by the support from both new and old friends, those who are close and those who are far away. I can only say that I’m heartbroken and still expect her to walk through the door. I wish that everyone takes care of themselves and their loved ones during this difficult time.”
Lindsay was a well-known and highly respected competitive cyclist in British Columbia and beyond, earning top podium placings at the Canadian Gravel National Championships, Canadian Cyclocross National Championships, Canadian Esports Championships, Whistler Gran Fondo, TransRockies stage race, Tripleshot Cross Fondo and many more.
Central Saanich Police on Vancouver Island report the deadly crash occurred shortly after 10:00, with bystanders and emergency services arriving on scene quickly to provide life saving aid. Lindsay was then transported to Victoria General Hospital, but despite heroic efforts of emergency room doctors she died from her injuries.
The crash reportedly occurred at an intersection controlled by a race volunteer, not police. Sgt. Paul Brailey of Central Saanich police told the Times Colonist, “A volunteer road marshal was directing traffic at the intersection, and there may have been a misunderstanding about right of way and the control of the intersection.”
Alcohol and excessive speed were not factors in the crash according to Brailey, with the driver of the pick-up truck remaining at the scene and cooperating with police investigators.
430 riders participated in this year’s edition of Tripleshot Cross Fondo, a race run by volunteers on a mixed-surface route announced on race day. The annual event is a charity fundraiser for local youth cycling programs.
