As the 2024 gran fondo season wraps up in the northern hemisphere, Italian Laura Simenc (TEAM DE ROSA SANTINI) went out in style, with a champagne victory at Gran Fondo Il Lombardia on Sunday morning in Cantu, Italy.
The 34 year-old former UCI Gran Fondo World Champion finished the 7th edition of the amateur race, including the iconic Madonna de Ghisallo climb outside Bellagio, solo in 3:16:47, with Italian’s Loretta Giudici and Annalisa Prato next to finish the 109km route in 3:20:20.
For the men it was 24 year-old Giuseppe Orlando (CYCLING EXPLORERS) earning the win from an elite group of nine riders who battled up the final climb. The Italian stopped the clock in 2:57:08, followed seconds later by fellow Italian Riccardo Zacchi and Frenchman Thomas Bonaud.
In perfect autumn conditions over 2000 amateur cyclists started Gran Fondo Il Lombardia, which took place the day after the professional Il Lombardia race, won for a fourth time by Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates).
