The final weekend of UCI Gravel World Championship qualifying saw Tiffany Cromwell (CANYON SRAM) and Matevz Govekar (BAHRAIN VICTORIOUS) reach the top of the podium at Sea Otter Costa Brava in Spain.

After a horrible start in the 107 kilometer race that forced Australian Tiffany Cromwell to claw her way back from a two minute deficit, Cromwell convincingly dropped German rival Valeria Kleiner in the final kilometers to finish first in 3:57:07, followed 23 seconds later be Kleiner and 81 seconds ahead of French rider Axelle Dubau-Prevot, who took the last women’s podium step.

I have no idea how I pulled that one off,” a breathless Cromwell announced after crossing the finish line. “Given how terrible I was at the start, I thought my chances were over.”

Fresh off a stage win at the Tour of Britain, Matevz Govekar, showcased his impressive end-of-season form in the men’s race. With a strong kick, the Slovenian rode German Paul Voss and Czech Petr Vakoc off his wheel in the final meters to win in 3:23:46. Voss and Vakoc finished in that order 8 seconds in arrears.

560 graveleurs competed in UCI Sea Otter Costa Brava, with those lucky enough to finish in the top 25% of their age/gender category qualifying to race at the upcoming UCI Gravel World Championships in Belgium 4-5 October.
