With over 4000 riders, the second 2025 UCI Gran Fondo World Championship qualifying race took place in Australia on Sunday 15 September. Amy’s Gran Fondo allowed amateur racers an opportunity to not only qualify for the world championships, but also preview the course that will be used next October when Lorne, Australia hosts the worlds.
By finishing in the top 25% of their age/gender category at a UCI Gran Fondo World Series event, 653 amateur cyclists earned a starting position for the 2025 world championships.
Taking top overall honors was 24 year-old Tynan Shannon who finished the 122km gran fondo in 2:59:14 after sprinting to victory from a 20 rider pack of men in the M19-34 category. Alistair Forsyth and Jordan Villani finished second and third.
In the women’s competition Emma Ochoa, W19-34, won the gran fondo in 3:15:17, followed by Juliette Hadow (3:16:36) and Megan Mansfield (3:20:37).
As is typical at UCI Gran Fondo World Series events, “old men” categories saw the biggest field sizes. 437 riders competed in the M50-54 category, followed by M55-59 at 373, M19-34 at 350 and M40-44 at 321. The largest women’s field, W19-34, contained 88 riders.
