Even before the 2025 UCI Gravel World Series calendar rolls out, one of the premier events announced it will not return and is being discontinued. Organizer of South Africa’s epic Swartberg 100 Gran Fondo, MTBAfrica Events, has decided to focus on other more profitable business endeavors.
“We have had to re-evaluate our focus and available time on all the projects we have going in the MTBAfrica Events company. There is the return on investment in time and money but more importantly there is the opportunity cost to consider. Given our current commitments, it is with a heavy heart that we have to announce the end of the Swartberg 100 Gran Fondo and Medio Fondo, we thank you for all your support in the past, it’s been a great journey.” John Swanepoel – Race Director and Chief Domestique
The event was the only UCI Gravel World Championship qualifying race held on the African continent this year.
Started in 2016, the Swartberg 100 Gran Fondo was part of the UCI Gravel World Series for three years (2022-2024), providing an opportunity for hundreds of elite and amateur gravel racers, including F1 superstar Valtteri Bottas, the opportunity to race in the rugged Swartberg Mountains and (hopefully) qualify for the annual UCI Gravel World Championships.
