Belgium’s Houffalize Gravel Fondo, part of the UCI Gravel World Championship qualifying series, saw over 1800 eager graveleurs take to the start line in Houffalize on Saturday 24 August to try and qualify for the upcoming world championships, which take place just 90 minutes away in October.
On the 110 kilometer long route 30 year-old pro Austrian Sebastian Schonberger (TEAM FELT FELBERMAYR), wearing his Austrian Gravel National Champion’s jersey, won the overall race, finishing in 3:22:52 to earn a starting slot at the gravel world championships. Next to reach the finish was a pair of youngsters, 25 year-old Alexys Brunel (3:23:08) of France, followed by 22 year-old Belgian Arne Baers (3:24:43).
The German Romy Kasper (HUMAN POWERED HEALTH) won the women’s race, with the 36 year-old pro stopping the clock in 4:00:48. Australians Frain Nicole (4:06:03) and Tiffany Cromwell (4:08:00) took second and third place.
In the shorter 68km race for older category rider Lars Van Der Sloot (2:33:06) of Germany was the first man, with Belgian Marjolein Truyers (3:00:24) the first woman.
Riders finishing in the top 25% of their UCI age/gender category automatically qualify to race in the upcoming UCI Gravel World Championships taking place in Belgium in October.
