With the 2024 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships set to begin in Aalborg, Denmark in less than two weeks, the organizer announced registrations are on a record pace, warning would-be participants to register immediately due to limited starting spots remaining.
With 2900 riders already registered for the Time Trial and/or Gran Fondo, the event is on track to break the record of 3175 participants who took part in the Varese, Italy World Championships in 2018.
This overwhelming interest presents significant logistical challenges for organizers, particularly for the Time Trial, which is limited to only 720 riders due to road restrictions. The UCI and the local organizer will close Time Trial registrations once this limit is reached. With 651 riders currently signed up for the Thursday 29 August Time Trial, the remaining 69 slots are expected to go quickly, very quickly.
Organizers are also considering an early closure for Gran Fondo registrations to maintain a fair and safe race environment, given that all qualifying events have concluded.
So far, a total of 74 different nationalities have signed up with Belgium having the largest team at 405 riders, followed by Denmark (293), Germany (261), France (202) and the Netherlands (200). From outside Europe, Australia is bringing the most participants (110), followed by the USA (93), Brazil (45), Canada (42) and Costa Rica (33).
