The 2024 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Aalborg, Denmark will have for the first time a World Championship Team Relay race. While the event has been a part of the world championships since 2013, it has always been a non-championship spectator event. On Friday 30 August teams of amateur riders representing their countries will have the opportunity to win full-fledged world championship rainbow striped jerseys, along with gold medals.
Although there were no Team Relay competitions at any of the 2024 UCI Gran Fondo World Championship qualifying events, riders who qualify for the world championship Time Trial, Gran Fondo or Medio Fondo races may participate in the Team Relay.
The Team Relay format is the same as previous editions, a short relay featuring national teams of four riders from different age groups, including one male rider of any age, one female rider of any age, one rider aged 40+ and one rider aged 50+.
The event is mass start on road bikes, with one rider from each national team on course at a time. The race will take place on a 2.2km spectator friendly circuit alongside the Aarlborg harbor front ridden multiple times by each of the four riders after an “exchange.” Drafting is allowed and each rider on the winning team (first team to reach the finish) will receive a UCI world champion rainbow jersey.
As is the case in every UCI Gran Fondo World Championship race, all UCI rules apply, including a minimum bike weight of 6.8kg.
