The Tour de Big Bear, one of California’s most important cycling events, returned to Big Bear Lake in the southern part of the state on Saturday 3 August.

Set at a breathless altitude of 7000 feet in the mountains just a few hours from downtown Los Angeles, the event attracted 2100 riders on 100, 70, 50 and 25 mile routes, plus a gravel option.

Jesse Hogin, 34, from Las Vegas, Nevada won the 100-mile gran fondo in 4:32:29, with Southern Californians Alexander Stevens (4:32:57) in second place and Michael Loweree (4:34:05) third.

Sylvain Georges, 40, handily won the 70 mile race in 3:12:42, followed by Juan Rocha (3:22:44) and Jefferey Lalloway (3:26:39).

51 year-old Daniel Caballero was fastest in the 50-mile event, crossing the finish in a quick 2:07:09. Brian Ganz and Hugo Daza were next in 2:17:38 and 2:19:46 respectively. Matt Large claimed the Tour de Little Bear 25-mile race in 1:25:16.

The Dirty Bear 50-mile gravel race was won by old-man Eric Beirman, 49, in 3:19:34, just ahead of youngsters Jacob Schoolfield, 26, and Dyson Smith, 18, with times of 3:22:07 and 3:24:43.
