Tragedy struck the 6th Desafio Dubai MTB XCM race last Sunday in Brasil when a rider died after being crushed by a sound truck speaker a few meters from the finish line.
Cyclist Jaiane Souza Oliveira Fernandes, 34, was racing in the event in Baianopolis, Brasil, when she crashed into a sound truck parked next to the course while sprint towards the finish, causing a giant 2 meter high speaker to fall on top of Jaiane, hitting her head and crushing her.
Footage taken by a spectator shows the crash.
Bystanders immediately called for emergency responders and raced over to lift the speaker off the cyclist. Paramedics arrived quickly and rushed Jaiane to hospital, but despite best efforts of emergency room doctors she was pronounced dead.
Race organizer Dubai Bikers posted on Instagram: “On behalf of the entire Dubai Bikers team, we regret the death of the cyclist, Jaiane Oliveira. In this moment of pain and grief, we want to express our most sincere condolences to your husband, children and family members. The loss of this special person leaves a deep emptiness in our hearts!”
