UPDATE 24 September 2024: Bergozza has been banned for 3 years by NADO Italia.
2022 UCI Gran Fondo World Champion and 2024 Italian Champion Giuseppina Michela Bergozza (ASD SCATENATI) has allegedly failed an anti-doping test, returning a positive anti-doping test result for Erythropoietin (EPO), a performance enhancing drug banned at all times by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
The Italian National Anti-Doping Organization (NADO Italia) made the announcement and has provisionally suspended the 55 year-old amateur cyclist.
In 2022 she won a UCI Gran Fondo World Championship title and rainbow jersey in Trento, Italy, dominating the Women’s 50-54 field to win by five minutes.
Recently, Bergozza won the Italian National Gran Fondo Championships on 23 June at Gran Fondo Terre dei Varano, as well as finishing second overall at Granfondo Squali 12 May.
Until Bergozza’s alleged EPO doping case is resolved by the Italian National Anti-Doping Tribunal, she is prohibited from participating in sport in any capacity.
