One of the final opportunities to qualify for the 2024 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships took place this past weekend in Switzerland under miserable conditions, with rain drenching riders throughout the 148km gran fondo course in the Alps.

22 year-old Swiss pro Petra Stiasny (FENIX-DECEUNINCK) achieved a remarkable double victory, dominating the women’s gran fondo on Sunday to win by over 20 minutes with a final time of 5:33:26 and climbing to victory on the 7km Col de la Croix time trial in 24:08 on Friday.

With a 10 minute winning margin, 23 year-old Grégoire Lemaire (BRUSSELS CYCLING CLUB) of Belgium claimed the men’s gran fondo in 4:53:24, while 29 year-old British Hill Climb Champion Edward Laverack (BACKPEDAL) won the Col de la Croix time trial for the men in a blistering 18:53.

The medio fondo for older riders trying to qualify for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships saw victories by former UCI Gran Fondo World Champion Jean-Luc Chavanon, 60, and Sally Ashbridge, 61.

Riders finishing in the top 25% of their UCI age/gender category automatically qualify to attend the world championships taking place in Denmark in late September.
