UCI Gravel World Championship Series qualifying rolled into southern Germany on 30 June for the first edition of Hegau Gravel, with Germans Carolin Schiff and Jonas Koch winning from a field of 725 competitors on a muddy rain shortened course.
Carolin Schiff (CANYON CLLCTV), winner of Wish One Gravel a few weeks ago in France, added another UCI win to her palmarès. The 38 year-old German national champion claimed the women’s 104km race by winning a tight 3-up sprint against fellow German Janine Schneider and Maaike Colje of Netherlands.
On Instagram Schiff posted, “Happy to take the win 🏆 at the @ucigravelworldseries in Singen 🇩🇪. I really liked the hard course and it was a hard and honest race today with @j_nini_s & @maaikecolje. Thanks for the good fight”
31 year-old WorldTour road racer Jonas Koch (BORA HANSGROHE) savored a solo gravel victory, winning in 3:20:33. Belgian cyclocross specialist Daan Soete took second place 38 seconds later by outsprinting Czech Petr Vakoc.
Fastest in the shorter 54km race was Philipp Burkner (1:54:00 M19-34) and Michelle Runkel (2:09:28 W19-34).
Riders finishing in the top 25% in their age/gender category qualify to participate in the UCI Gravel World Championships 5-6 October in Flanders, Belgium.
