Dallas Fort Worth Airport Police in the USA have arrested Benjamin Peter Hylander after he allegedly ran over two cyclists with his SUV on Monday 17 June while the riders were on a group ride, according to numerous local news outlets.
The entire horrific incident was capture with a Garmin on-bike camera.
WARNING THE VIDEO BELOW IS VERY GRAPHIC.
In the video, a white Subaru SUV drives up at high speed from behind the cyclists before ramming them, throwing two riders immediately and violently onto the concrete road. The car then swerves, slows briefly, proceeds to run over one of the cyclists with the front and back wheels of the SUV, and then flees the scene.
Police and medics were immediately called, while other cyclists pursued the SUV to a gas station where they cornered the driver, Benjamin Peter Hylander, 31, who reportedly works at the airport.
Hylander returned to the scene of the crash and was arrested by Dallas Fort Worth Airport Police on suspicion of driving while alcohol intoxicated. Police indicate Hylander failed a blood alcohol breathalyzer test, and when searching his SUV they found six empty cans of beer behind the passenger seat. Hylander told police he had a few beers about an hour earlier, but police report the details of his story were inconsistent and kept changing.
Hylander has now been charged with two counts of intoxication assault with a vehicle, one count of accident involving injury and one count of driving while intoxicated. Other charges are likely. He is in custody at the Tarrant County jail and must post a $36,500 bond to be released.
Police identified the two cyclists run over as Thomas Geppert, 69, and Deborah Eads, 65, both local riders. Geppert was transported to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center, while Eads was treated by medics at the scene and released. Amazingly, both are expected to fully recover.
