Multi-discipline Australian pro cyclist Lachlan Morton won the world’s largest gravel race, Unbound Gravel, on Saturday 1 June in the Flint Hills of Kansas, USA.
In a thrilling two-up sprint through the city center of Emporia, the 32 year-old Morton (EF Education-EasyPost) defeated former WorldTour American pro Chad Haga, 35, to claim victory with an emphatic fist pump after 200 grueling miles of racing. The pair finished in 9:11:47 with an amazing average speed of 22.05mph.
Over three minutes later Tobias Kongstad of Denmark edged out the Dutch Piotr Havik and Italian Mattia De Marchi on the finish line to take the last podium step. 2023 champion Keegan Swenson finished fourteenth.
In another thrilling sprint finish, 27 year-old Rosa Kloser from Denmark, who only began racing two years ago, won the Unbound Gravel 200 women’s race in 10:26:02, followed immediately by the Dutch Geerike Schreurs, 35, and Paige Onweller, 34, of the USA. Carolin Schiff, who won last year, finished sixth. NOTE: Sarah Sturm, initially reported as winning, finished seventh.
3x USA National MTB Champion Elliott Barring, 28, won the Unbound Gravel 100-mile race in 4:56:30, while USA Gravel National Champion Laura Stephens, 37, won the women’s in 5:06:40.
Sebastian Brueur, 34, of Germany won the 350-mile Unbound XL sufferfest race, setting a new course record of 20:05:36 with an average speed of 17.52mph!
Over 5000 pro, elite and amateur age-group cyclists participated in Unbound Gravel this year.
