On Saturday 27 April 2024 police in Calvert County Maryland, USA arrested David Earl Bustin, 66, and charged him with two counts of First-Degree Assault and two counts of Reckless Endangerment after he allegedly engaged in ‘road rage’ and fired a shotgun at cyclists.

Police reports indicate two cyclists were participating in the End Hunger 50-mile group ride when Bustin, driving a pickup truck behind them, engaged in road rage, attempted to run them off road, then retrieved a shotgun and fired three shots towards the cyclists.

The cyclists were not injured during the incident, but immediately called police.

When police arrived at the scene Bustin was placed under arrest and later a search warrant was executed where three spent shotgun shells and a Winchester Model 1300 shotgun were recovered.

According to court documents Bustin told Detective William Freeland of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office that “the cyclists were approximately 20 yards away when he fired his shotgun,” and he was just “unloading his shotgun.”

Under Maryland law, First-Degree Assault is a felony, carrying a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison, as the offense is defined as a crime of violence.  Reckless Endangerment is a misdemeanor which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and/or a fine of $5000.

Bustin has retained an attorney and was released from county jail on $1000 bond and promise to appear in court at a to-be-scheduled date.
