Austria’s Neusiedlersee Radmarathon started two days of UCI Gran Fondo World Championship qualifying on Saturday in Mörbisch, with over 500 riders racing against the time trial clock on a 26km course and 1900 waiting to start the 125km gran fondo Sunday morning. Riders finishing in the top 25% of their age/gender category in the time trial or gran fondo automatically qualify to participate in the 2024 amateur world championships taking place in Denmark next autumn.

Claiming top honors with the fastest time trial result on Saturday was 37 year-old Hungarian Daniel Szalay (Radl-Eck Racing Team), who stopped the clock in 35:33 with an average speed of 44kph. Earning second place and only 10 seconds back was the Dane Jeppe Tolboll (35:44), with local rider Maximilian Kuen (35:46) taking the final podium step.

27 year-old Anna Kofler (Team Cookina ARBÖ ASKÖ GRAZ) was the fastest woman, winning with a time of 40:47. Annika Artinger (41:57) was next, with Magdalena Bernhard (42:29) rounding out the podium.

On Sunday Jeroen Van Voorden of Holland, also 27 years-old, won the 125km gran fondo race in a two-up sprint against Marcin Karbowy of Poland, both recording a final time of 3:02:45. Belgian Ward Mercier claimed the trailing bunch sprint for third place in 3:03:08.

Austrian Alisa Winter, only 20 years-old, dominated the women’s gran fondo to win in 3:07:25. Germans Annika Artinger (3:19:01) and Mira Fischer (3:19:04) were next.

UCI Gran Fondo World Champion and former WorldTour star Johnny Hoogerland, 41, finished ninth at 3:03:11. Rising young star Marek Stiblik of Czechoslovakia, just 16 years-old, was 18th in 3:03:55, beating many, many older and more experienced racers.
