Ex-WorldTour racer Alejandro Valverde, who retired from road cycling in 2022, continued his off-road winning ways on Saturday at the UCI La Indomable gravel world championship qualifier in Spain. Wearing bib #1, the 43 year-old Movistar Team Gravel rider soloed across the finish line arms raised after 96km of racing, including 2400m of climbing, to score his second consecutive La Indomable victory.
Valverde finished in 3:25:16, with the French Hugo Drechou next at 3:26:00 and the Portuguese Tiago Ferreira crossing the finish in 3:27:10 to finish third overall.
Valverde now heads to Southern California for the legendary Belgian Waffle Ride taking place next weekend, Sunday 28 April, in the gravel hills around San Marcos.
Karoline Mignon (4:09:42) won the women’s 96km race, with Caroline Schiff (4:11:29) in second place and Klara Sofie Skovgard Hansen (4:13:43) third.
Mario Fernandez Martinez (2:11:25) won the men’s 51km race, with Silvia Hurtado Diaz (2:42:31) doing the same for the women.
