One of America’s most enduring cycling events has been canceled for 2024 due to lackluster rider registrations, according to the organizers.
Over 2000 cyclists were expected to take part in the 37th edition of Colorado’s Ride The Rockies from 9-15 June, traveling 400 miles over 7 days with 23000 feet of climbing in the northwestern part of the state.
“After much consideration and evaluation of the limited registration, we regret that Ride The Rockies 2024 is canceled. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the towns, participants, sponsors, crew, volunteers, and supporters who have had a role in making this ride so special for the past 37 years,” a statement on the group’s Facebook page read.
Adding, “We are assessing the best options for this beloved ride.” Leaving many participants to doubt its return.
“Wow, after years and years of having to register and participate through a lottery system because there was too much demand…..this. A classic Colorado gem gone by the wayside,” one person posted on Facebook.
Ride The Rockies was started by The Denver Post newspaper in 1986, with 1500 riders traversing the state from Grand Junction to Denver.
This marks second major cycling event in the USA to be cancelled this year, with the 47th edition of Joe Martin Stage Race also calling it quits in March.
