The sunny Caribbean city of Punta Cana kicked off the 2024 GFNY season by hosting the fourth edition of GFNY Republica Dominicana last Sunday, with over 350 riders finishing the 150km route including 962m of vertical gain.
The men’s competition was whittled down to just ten lead riders by mid-race, with former Republica Dominicana Junior National Champion Daniel Cedeño escaping from the bunch with ten kilometers remaining to earn victory. The now 20 year-old soloed across the finish in 3:33:45. Colombian Johnatan Ospina (3:34:44) and Dominican Fraylin Bierd (3:34:45) led the chasing bunch across the line to earn second and third place respectively.
2023 GFNY North America champion Erialis Otero of Puerto Rico dominated the women’s race to win by over ten minutes with a final time of 3:38:09. Local Dominican rider Juana Fernandez (3:49:23) defeated American Maria Gonzalez (3:49:24) in a close sprint to round out the podium.
The 2024 GFNY worldwide series of more than a dozen gran fondo events continues on Sunday in Uruguay at the sixth edition of GFNY Punta del Este.
