Former UCI Road World Champion, winner of 54 grand tour stages Mario Cipollini added another title to his legendary palmarès recently, winning the Gran Fondo World Tour® amateur world championships at EPIC Gran Canaria in Spain.
The 56 year-old Italian won the men’s 50-59 year-old world title after completing three timed gran fondo segments totaling 80km in 2:56:52, while also finishing 13th overall from a field of 500 competitors.

Also winning Gran Fondo World Tour® titles were Luca Chiesa (M30-39), Simon De Ritter (M Elite), former World Tour pro Luis Leon Sanchez (M40-49), Fabio Alberi (M60+), Marta Luna Uroz De La Iglesia (W Elite), Emilie Bottini (W30-39), Muresan Manuella (W40-49), Kerstin Brachtendorf (W50-59).
EPIC Gran Canaria is part of the Gran Fondo World Tour®, a series of 20 gran fondo events worldwide similar to the UCI Gran Fondo World Series. Though, unlike the UCI series, riders need not qualify to participate in the annual Gran Fondo World Tour® world championships.
