The newest event to join the 2024 UCI Gran Fondo World Championship Qualifying Series is also the only event in the 30 race series to announce all routes will be run on FULLY CLOSED ROADS, according to a social media post from the organizer.
Gran Fondo Ireland taking place 29-30 June in the town of Sligo in the northern part of the country made the thrilling announcement on Friday.

Race director Michael Hurl told stickybottle.com, “This is a monumental achievement and a testament to the collaborative efforts of our team and the incredible support from Sligo County Council and the wider stakeholders. Securing a full road closure is a rare opportunity in the world of cycling events, and it elevates the UCI Gran Fondo in Sligo to an unparalleled level of experience for cyclists and spectators alike.”
Riders on all UCI Gran Fondo World Championship qualifying routes, including the 26km individual time trial, 155km gran fondo and 110km medio fondo, will race on fully closed roads just like pros in the Tour de France.
Riders finishing in the top 25% of their age/gender category automatically qualify to race in the world championships taking place in Aalborg, Denmark next September/October.
