Former MLB base-stealing star Carlos “Go-Go” Gomez was one of the fastest runners in baseball for 13 seasons, now the former center fielder is looking to take his lightning leg speed to the 2024 Paris Olympics on the velodrome.
According to a social media post from baseball sports writer Todd Rosiak of The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Gomez, 38, will try to qualify for the Olympics in May, hoping to represent the Dominican Republic on the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines Velodrome next August at the track events.
During his baseball career Gomez stole 268 bases, made two All-Star teams and won a Gold Glove Award, all while playing for the Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins, Texas Rangers, New York Mets, Houston Astros and Tampa Bay Rays.
If Gomez qualifies for the Olympics he will be only the second cyclist to represent his native Dominican Republic at the Olympics, but qualifying will be no easy task. Only 190 track riders (95 men and 95 women) worldwide will be allowed to compete in Paris, with most of those positions likely already allocated.
Though, Gomez has overcoming huge challenges before. At age 16 he decided to pursue a career in baseball, moving by himself from the Dominican Republic to New York City to play baseball for the New York Mets, eventually becoming one of their best players.
