One of South Africa’s best junior racers is in a coma after being hit by an automobile while training for the national road championships. Jessie Munton, 17, was left in a life-threatening coma after an automobile driven by an allegedly intoxicated driver crashed into her on 14 January 2024.
On GoFundMe her brother Byron Munton posted, “Jessie has been fighting for her life in ICU for nearly a month with severe brain damage. Initially placed in an induced coma to manage the critical condition she was in, she now rests in her own coma, with our prayers fervently awaiting the day her eyes open again.”
Munton is the 2023 South African Junior Time Trial National Champion and represented South Africa internationally at the 2023 Youth Commonwealth Games in Trinidad and Tobago as well, finishing 5th in the time trial, and 4th in the road race.
The financial burden of Munton’s medical is now “overwhelming” according to her brother and the family is seeking donations to help with the estimated 100,000+ Euro cost of her recovery.
“Up until now Jessie has been receiving treatment at a private hospital near the accident site, where she has received exceptional care. The next phase of her journey involves at least six months of intensive neurological rehabilitation in a specialised facility, the costs of which are substantial,” her brother wrote.
So far 16,750 Euros have been donated via GoFundMe to help with Munton’s rehabilitation care, scans, doctor visits, essential medical equipment and more.
