Ironman® and the International Testing Agency (ITA) announced last week that Brazilian amateur age group triathlete Derik Felix Afornali tested positive for the banned substance Clomifene at the 2022 Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii and has been banned for two years.

Prior to his participation in the men’s Ironman® World Championship race Afornali submitted an out-of-competition anti-doping test sample, which later tested positive for the banned substance according to the ITA.

Clomifene is prohibited under the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Prohibited List as a hormone and metabolic modulator. It is primarily prescribed as a female fertility drug, but has the potential to boost Testosterone in males while increasing muscle mass.

Afornali finished 104th from a field of 383 competitors in the 30 to 34 age group with a time of 9:43:20 at the race in Kona.

Afornali’s ban from sport runs from 4 October 2022, the day the sample was collected, until 3 October 2024.
