Heavy snow in the days leading up to the 10th Old Man Winter Gravel Rally in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado turned the course into a muddy mess when the sun came out and temperatures warmed on race day – Sunday February 4.

With a late morning start, frozen dirt and gravel segments became sloshy, sticky and almost unrideable by the time riders rolled out, forcing organizers to shorten the race from 100km to 74km.

Although the gritty conditions were tough on equipment, it did not slow down the almost 300 competitors. Covered from head-to-toe in mud, 27 year-old Noah Granigan (Denver Disruptors) won the event in 2:17:04, defeating U23 USA Cyclocross Champion Ivan Sippy (2:17:05) and Alexy Vermeulen (2:17:05) in final sprint under the finish banner.

21 year-old Madigan ‘Maddie’ Munro (Trek Factory Racing) soloed to victory in the women’s race with a finishing time of 2:29:26, with Deanna Mayles (2:36:05) and Kate Cross (2:38:54) taking the final podium spots.

In the 50km gravel race with over 1000 riders, Gwenn Jorgensen won the women’s category in 1:44:05, with Oliver Townsend achieve the same result for the men in 1:39:05.
