On Friday the UCI made a last minute addition to the 2024 UCI Gran Fondo World Series Calendar, with Gran Fondo Ireland now becoming a world championship qualifying event.

Cycling Ireland Sport and Operations Director Paul Watson made the announcement, “We are delighted to be in Sligo today for the official launch of the 2024 UCI Gran Fondo Ireland. This is a brilliant opportunity for all our members, especially our Leisure riders, and we are looking forward to seeing a big turnout for the UCI Gran Fondo Ireland this summer, to enjoy the challenge of Gran Fondo riding. Demand for places will be high, and with the total number of entry places available capped – we would recommend early entry to avoid disappointment.”

A 21.5km time trial will take place on Saturday 29 June, with a 160km gran fondo and 113km medio fondo planned for the next day, Sunday 30 June. Routes have yet to be revealed, but are expected to be quite challenging in the rugged coastal countryside near the northern host city of Sligo.

The first 25% of finishers in each age/gender category will qualify for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Aalborg, Denmark next August.
