MyWhoosh and the UCI have announced a unique new points race omnium and qualification process for the 2024 UCI Esports Cycling World Championships, including 60 everyday amateur riders joining the world’s best to race for world titles and virtual rainbow jerseys.

The new qualification system will accommodate 150 men and 150 women in the semi-finals for the first time. This expansion in the number of participants reflects MyWhoosh’s strategy to foster growth in esports cycling via a more inclusive platform for competitors globally. Approximately 80% of the starting spots for the semi-finals will be allocated to National Cycling Federations (just like the UCI Road World Championships), which will then select their national representatives. The remaining 20% of semi-finalists (30 men and 30 women) will qualify through the MyWhoosh platform’s public qualification process (to be announced) open to riders of all abilities free-of-charge.

The semi-finals – taking place in a two-stage virtual format – will be held in September, with the participation of the 150 qualified athletes in each gender competing from across the world. The first stage will cover a challenging 9-kilometer circuit, with a points system determining the top 80 who will advance to the next race. In the second stage, riders will complete four laps of a 4-kilometer circuit, narrowing the field down to the top 20 riders who will advance to the live final on 26 October in Abu Dhabi.

The 20 qualified men and 20 qualified women (plus two UCI wild cards per gender) will be invited to Abu Dhabi to compete in the final in-person live event across three, short stages, earning points in each stage that determine final rankings. Male and female riders amassing the highest total point scores across the three stages will be crowned the 2024 UCI Cycling Esports World Champions.

Starting with The Sprint stage, riders will be given 15 minutes to set their fastest time over a 300 meter individual timed segment in a mass start event on a 1.7 km circuit. Stage 2 – The Strategy – will consist of a 9 km lap with a longer climb and is all about accumulating points over three sprints per lap – top of climb, bottom of climb and at finish(double points). All Out is the final stage, taking place over a 4 km circuit, ridden four times, with points earned at the top of a short, sharp leg-snapper climb on each lap.

MyWhoosh says all courses used in the semi-finals and finals will be made available for training and racing in advance of the events.
