Two days after being doored by a truck driver and violently crashing to the ground, Italian amateur cyclist Corrado Badocco died on Saturday due to head injuries sustained in incident.
The 47 year-old was riding on a provincial road in Maristoca when the driver of a parked commercial truck from Poland suddenly swung open the truck door, directly striking Badocco and throwing him violently to the ground head first.
Emergency medics arrived at the scene of the crash quickly to administer life-saving care and transport Badocco to hospital in Vicenza via helicopter, where neurosurgeons did everything possible to save him. Unfortunately, the head trauma was too severe and Badocco passed away around noon on Saturday.
It is unknown if Badocco was wearing a helmet.
The name of the truck driver has not been released, but local authorities are expected to investigate the incident and possibly charge the driver with manslaughter.
