The Giro d’Italia arrived in America this past weekend in the form of a gran fondo with the inaugural Giro d’Italia Ride Like A Pro USA event. The first amateur cycling event of the 2024 season took place in the oldest USA city, St. Augustine, on the Atlantic coast of Florida

Starting out in cool 43F cloudy conditions, a small field of 161 cyclists rode on 86, 60 and 33-mile routes using the “American” gran fondo model to compete only on short timed segments, rather than the entire route. 

35 year-old Floridian David Wright (Ponte Vedra Racing) won the 86 mile gran fondo event by completing four timed segments in 51:33, with 50 year-old Terence Autner (51:37) in second place and up-and coming 14 year-old racer Ethan Courson (51:38) earning the final podium step.

Sarah Powers, 43, won the women’s race in 52:40, followed by Luciana Vinocur (53:26) and JoAnn Betz (53:56).

Connie Corsello from Atlanta, Georgia won the 60 mile medio fondo, she finished the three timed segments in 45:56. Robert DeSantis (46:53) won the men’s race.
