Amateur Iranian junior road cyclist Danial Farzaneh, 18, has been banned for two years after testing positive for Tamoxifen, according to Iranian National Anti-Doping Organization officials.

Farzaneh (Team Azad University Tabriz) accepted that he committed an anti-doping rule violation and is banned from participating in any World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) governed sport in any capacity from 23 September 2023 until 22 September 2025.

Online results show Farzaneh finished 16th overall and 4th in the KOM competition at the 4-stage UCI Tour of Marand – Aras junior race in 2023.

Tamoxifen, an anti-estrogenic substance, is specifically banned at all times by WADA. The drug is primarily prescribed to treat breast cancer, but has been used by some athletes to counteract the adverse side effects of using steroids like Testosterone.

“When men take Testosterone in large doses, it changes into estrogen and they can develop a condition known as gynaecomastia, which causes them to grow breasts.” wrote Professor Bruce Davis in a doping study published in the UK Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine. “Taking Tamoxifen prevent this by repressing the body’s production of estrogen.”
