KXAN news in Austin, Texas reports that seven-time disgraced Tour de France winner and self-confessed doper Lance Armstrong, now an occasional gran fondo racer, had over $100,000 worth of bikes stolen from a local storage locker.
Police say Shaun Thompson, 36, and Ethan Harms, 33, allegedly broke into Armstrong’s Extra Space Storage unit 10-12 December and stole four racing bikes with Armstrong’s name emblazoned on the top tube, plus several frames. Both men have been charged with property theft of $30,000 – $150,000 according to court records.
Items Armstrong reported stolen according to the police affidavit:
- 2023 Ventum GS-1 gravel bike with Shimano GRX Di2 drivetrain and Zipp wheels valued at $8,500.
- 2016 Cannondale Super Six EVO road bike with custom paint, SRAM eTap drivetrain and Zipp carbon valued at $10,500.
- 2010 Trek Madone road bike (Team Radioshack) with SRAM Red mechanical drivetrain and Bontrager wheels ridden by Armstrong from 2010-2012. Armstrong and his staff claim the bike would be worth about $50,000 at auction.
- 2002 Trek S500 frame with Shimano Dura Ace components valued at $6,500.
- MTB frame custom built in Europe for Armstrong with stated value of at least $30,000 at auction.
- Trek Madone 6.9 Red road frame used by Armstong’s Trek-Livestrong U23 development team worth $500.
Who would have thought used bikes from the world’s most famous doper would be worth so much??
