United States federal prosecutors have charged Arnold Low, 81, with manslaughter and driving while intoxicated after he allegedly hit and killed world champion cyclist Ethan Boyes in April 2023 in San Francisco.
Low was indicted on Wednesday 29 November by a grand jury on two felony counts associated the crash that killed 44 year-old Boyes while on a training ride in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
According to police, the car driven by Low was traveling at a high rate of speed when it crossed the center-line and collided head-on with Boyes, sending him into the windshield. Despite best life-saving efforts of on-scene medics and hospital doctors, Boyes died of his injuries.
An elite amateur cyclist, Boyes won four world titles in 2022 at the UCI Masters Track World Championship. He was also a ten-time USA National Champion and in 2018 set the USA 500m Flying Time Trail record of 26.461 seconds.
In court Low entered a plea of not guilty, but if convicted of the charges faces a maximum sentence of eight years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000 USD according to the federal prosectors.
