3500 cyclists participated in the 12th edition of Gran Fondo Siete Lagos in the beautiful Patagonia region of Argentina last weekend, with the husband and wife team of Leandro Messineo and Barbara Frisch both emerging victorious for their sponsor City Bikes.
Starting with an 11 kilometer uphill time trial on Saturday, 44 year-old Messineo, a 2x Argentinian National Time Trial Champion, covered the route in 14:39, breaking the record set last year by 6 seconds. Laureano Rosas (14:51) was in second place, with Enrique Estevez (14:52) third.
In a very close women’s race, Barbara Frisch, also 44 years-old, was the fastest woman in 17:22, followed closely by Cecilia Caillabet (17:27.379) and Dolores Rodriguez Rey (17:27.731).
On Sunday the main 110 kilometer gran fondo route started from the center of Villa La Angostura, before climbing high up into the mountains and around the event’s famous seven lakes, with Messineo and Frisch once again dominating the results.
Messineo won the men’s race in 2:52:04, with Enrique Estevez (2:52:17) and Efrain Toloza (2:52:36) crossing under the finish banner a few seconds later.
For the women Frisch won in 3:03:50, seven seconds up on Laura Bugarin Maria (3:03:57). Carolina Perez (3:14:40) was next to reach the summit finish.
