The 7th edition of L’Etape Ciudad de Mexico (CDMX) by Tour de France took place on the morning of 26 November in Mexico City. Starting from the emblematic Angel of Independence monument in the heart of the city, the event attracted over 2700 professional and amateur road cyclists – and one young mountain bike star.
The 109 kilometer flat route through the metropolitan area of 23 million residents was challenging not for the terrain, but for throngs of pedestrians criss-crossing the route. Notwithstanding, a large group stayed upright and together until the final kilometer, with each rider hoping to prevail in a final dash to the line.
But it was not a typical road sprinter who claimed victory, instead it was 23 year-old MTB cyclist Antonio de Jesús Sandoval Jiménez, a former national U23 off-road champion. With a winning time of 2:37:59 he bested veteran road racer José Martínez Lara by less than a second, followed by Aldo González Reza.
In the women’s gran fondo 20 year-old Samantha Ivette Martínez Guerrero won first place with an official time of 2:50:42. In second place was Mariana Domínguez Paredes with an official time of 2:56:07 and María Cruz Martínez was third in 3:01:35.
The 60 kilometer medio fondo saw Montserrat Pérez Vera, 30, win in 1:32:06 for the women, with Javier Albarrán Martín del Campo, 22, taking the men’s title in 1:27:34.
